Open innovation projects

4. July 2021

Here you will find examples of open innovation projects for inspiration, arranged according to the phase of the project in which openness plays an important role.

Openness in the planning phase

  • External crowdsourcing of ideas for innovation projects, e.g. by involving companies, citizens, organized civil society (NGOs, associations), the public sector/politics
  • Internal crowdsourcing of ideas for innovation projects in which all interested members of the organization can participate
  • Development of innovation ideas based on the publication of open research results or processes

Openness in the implementation

  • Participation of external stakeholders in innovation projects, e.g. in real laboratories or co-creation labs, through hackathons or via scholarship/cooperation/tandem programs that enable external stakeholders to work on internal projects
  • Participation of a broad group of internal employees in innovation projects, e.g. in co-creation labs or hackathons
  • Use of the institution’s infrastructure in innovation projects by external stakeholders, e.g. in makerspaces
  • Involvement of internal employees in external innovation projects (e.g. via scholarship/cooperation/tandem programs that enable cooperation between external stakeholders and employees)

Openness in the publication of the innovation product

  • Product is published with an open license that enables broad use, e.g. CC-BY license or software with open source
  • Product can be used publicly free of charge
  • Product is published/marketed by a non-profit organization (e.g. gGmbH)
